What is Vertical Heterophoria?
Vertical Heterophoria is an eye condition which is caused by an unnoticeably tiny difference in the height of each eye, making one eye slightly higher than the other. Affecting as much as 2/3 of the population, this misalignment is so slight that it cannot be detected by the naked eye. If not detected and treated, this condition can cause a great deal of discomfort throughout a person’s life.
Dr. Penza explains, “Much like other conditions, such as having one arm slightly longer than the other, Vertical Heterophoria often exists at birth. Those born with this defect learn to subconsciously compensate for the different heights of their eyes by tilting the head or using the muscles of the forehead to make the eyes level. While these corrections often do a fine job of correcting the issue, they often cause side effects such as severe headache, backache and more. You may also have a hard time keeping your place while reading as a result of this frustrating condition.”
Treatment
Discussing possible treatment for Vertical Heterophoria, Dr. Penza comments, “Here at City Optometry we employ a number of advanced and well developed techniques to treat Vertical Heterophoria, including prismatic spectacle lenses. Often, patients see a 30%-50% reduction in symptoms almost immediately, and a 70%-80% reduction after a few visits to fine tune and customize the lenses.”
